A Passion For Bizarre Fashion

My House Name is Ninja

You are an upcoming bizarre legend! I dont care what anyone says! When did you realize that you had a passion for making bizarre fashion?

Thank you! I’ve always been a person who likes to dress up and play with fashion. I’ve always had an interest in the arts, both visual and performing. So, it’s sort of been an evolution from when I started in the scene and what I’ve learned from my time performing musically and doing theatre growing up. Since my beginning in the ballroom scene, I always liked to put my best foot forward. I mostly walked drag categories when I started in ballroom. As a drag, you had to be well put together or you would get read. So putting together a “lewk” or to create/build an effect for bizarre evolved from that and I’m in a point in my life where creating for and walking the Bizarre category is my creative outlet.

I Am Nando Ninja

How would you describe your style? Also, what is your process for constructing a piece?

My style varies. I like to think I am a chameleon. I like to pull off different looks and styles. I do like to take inspiration from high fashion runway shows, street fashion, and things that are avante-garde. I can’t really describe my style as one thing. It depends on the event theme, my mood and whatever inspires me at the time. My process for constructing a piece starts with reading a category and brainstorming a concept. I then begin to sketch some ideas. From there, I put together a list of what I will need to build it. Then begins the building process. It’s always important for me to create with plenty of time to adapt or fix any issues that I run into when building.

I also know you are a teacher, do you encourage creativity among your students?

Yes. I’ve been a public school teacher for 12 years. I’m an elementary music teacher, so creativity plays a huge part in my classroom. I always make sure my students know that my classroom is a safe space to be themselves and to express their creativity in any way that makes them feel good. I encourage this because this is a great way to build confidence and high self-esteem. We encourage creativity in the music we make in our classroom and their school performances.

The Category Is Bizarre

What’s something about bizarre fashion/the category that you wish everyone knew?

I feel that a lot of times the Bizarre category is under appreciated. It’s one of the only, if not THE only category that you can’t wing it and walk. It takes time, craftsmanship, and dedication to build these effects. The part that can be offensive is when there is no cash prize for the winner. It takes money to buy materials and to build these effects. I wish the category was valued and respected for what it brings to the Ballroom Scene!

I Am The LatinXperencia

With National Hispanic Heritage Month approaching, are there any Hispanic and/or Latinx people who inspire you as it pertains to fashion?

I take inspiration from my Latin culture in general. I’m half Guatemalan and half Puerto Rican. My blood is mixed with Taino, Mayan, Spanish, and African. I love feeling inspired from these rich cultures that are a part of me and my family. It allows me to learn more of my background and where I come from. As far as celebrities that inspire me….Bad Bunny is definitely on that list. He gives zero f*cks about gender norms when it comes to fashion and that is something I admire and celebrate.

You can find me on Instagram @afgarcia85….or at an upcoming ball near you!
