Black People Matter, Too
"Created in the Spring of 2018, this piece was fashioned together from parts and points in time of the struggle of the African American, painting the picture of our sorrow, fight and constant battle for racial equality, equity and acceptance. The Black Panther movie was a huge inspiration behind this piece, as was the song by Kendrick Lamar released on his album To Pimp a Butterfly called "The Blacker the Berry". In it, Jamaican dancehall artist Assassin creatively illustrates how we've evolved in this nation over the course of 400 years, from the rusted chains of slavery to big gold chains around our neck, and from the scars from the whips left on our back to the whip parked in the back. He ends with more double entendre, poetically stating how even though we are doomed from the start, every race* starts from the block (pronounced as black aesthetically in patois).
Miles Morales
Debuting in August 2011, the Exaggerated Swagger of a Black Teen, Miles Morales, the All-New, All-Different Spider-Man became an instant sensation amongst comic readers, and especially the Black and Brown community, namely for miles ethnic background as an Afro-Latino. I made the piece about a year after just in time for Black History Month, stylizing his visage after his voice actor from the Into the Spider-Verse movie, Shameik Moore. I wanted to visualize him in all his afrocentric features, revealing the strength and innocence of the man behind the mask. Spider-man is a cultural icon, and for the newest iteration of the titular hero to be one that people like me, or my children, can identify with is truly an amazing experience, and a blessing to be a part of.
